Why podcast clips need a different cut
A good podcast clip is a complete thought: a question or setup, then the answer or punchline, without needing the previous ten minutes. Cutting on a fixed timer splits those thoughts in half. ToClips reads the full transcript and proposes clips around complete exchanges, and each candidate shows the exact transcript line it was chosen for, so you can judge the context before rendering.
Use the video recording of the episode. ToClips renders clips from the video track, so an audio-only file can be transcribed but will not become a postable video — there are no waveform or audiogram templates yet.
A typical episode workflow
- Upload the episode video, or several episodes at once (up to 20 files per job).
- Write one sentence about the clips you want, such as “standalone answers about hiring, under 60 seconds”.
- Choose 9:16 for Shorts, Reels and TikTok, 1:1 or 4:5 for feeds, and pick a caption style — Clean, Bold or Karaoke (bold yellow).
- Review the ranked candidates, trim the edges where a sentence starts too abruptly, then render and download each clip with its SRT file and cover.
Inputs and outputs
- Video: MP4, MOV, WebM and MPEG. Audio files (MP3, WAV, M4A) can be uploaded, but clips are rendered from a video track.
- Up to 5 GB per file and up to 20 files in one batch job.
- Up to 200 clips per job. With several sources, the target count is shared out in proportion to each file’s duration.
- Every clip: an H.264 MP4 with AAC audio, an SRT subtitle file and a cover image.
- Every source: a full transcript as SRT and VTT. The whole batch also downloads as one zip, with a JSON manifest of every clip decision.
Frequently asked questions
Can I upload audio only?
You can upload MP3, WAV or M4A, but clips are rendered from a video track, so use the video recording of the episode to get postable clips.
Will it label who is speaking?
Not at the moment. Transcripts have word-level timing but no speaker separation, so name your guests in the caption text if it matters.
How long can an episode be?
Any length up to 5 GB per file. Clip selection runs across the whole transcript, not just the opening minutes.
